Abstract

This paper is intended to describe the discourse in medical setting and how the patient embodied narrative to reconstitute the self. Medicine is regarded as one of arena where the body is fragmented in examinations and where the self is thus estranged and objectified. Narrative offers a means to unify and defragment experiences of medical practice. Patients can reintroduce themselves as persons into medical consultations through the insertion of personal stories. Narrative constitutes one cognitive mode of making sense of the world. For doctor, narratives can be viewed as means of making sense of their work and lives and as devices for conveying their meanings to the “outside” world. Medicine is thus recontextualised not only for the doctors themselves but also for their audiences, which may ultimately lead to enhanced mutual understanding and acknowledgement.
