Abstract

Pain in neurology perspective is a multidimensional sensory experience that is intrinsically unpleasant, associated with hurting and soreness. Pain is not a homogeneous sensory entity, several different types of pain exist: nociceptive, inflammatory, neuropathic, and functional pain. Pain is also one of the most difficult medical problems to diagnose and treat and can be a common symptom of several psychiatric disorders. Pain-related issues are heterogeneous and often underestimated or misinterpreted, with the result that psychiatric interventions, which might have been beneficial from the outset. An area of constant debate regards the connection between pain and various psychiatric disorders, and the difficulty in the classification of pain disorders within the currently existing framework.
The neurobiological mechanisms responsible for pain in neurology perspective are beginning to be defined, providing insight into how distinct types of pain are generated by diverse etiologic factors, and in which patients. Moreover, we can now realistically expect to move from an empirical therapeutic approach to one that it is targeted specifically at the particular mechanisms of pain experienced by an individual patient.
Effective pain management depends on a comprehensive assessment that clarifies the pathogenesis and etiology and evaluates the degree to which symptom itself or its associated manifestasions undermine function and quality of life. The pharmacological treatment of pain is complex and implies a variety of different medications, from opioids to psychotropic medications like antidepressants and anticonvulsants.
