Abstract
Abstract: The influence of hopelessness in one's life is seen when he facing a difficult situation, such as when he was diagnosed with a critical illness. This hopelessness scale was conducted for patients with chronic disease in order to help doctors, psychologists, nurses and other health practitioners to explore the psychological condition of patients associated with hopelessness. There for, they can provide appropriate treatment to maintain the emotional stability of the patient and enhance their potentials and capabilities. This hopelessness scale is based on the theory of Farran, Herth, & Popovich who sees hopelessness in three components: 1) Affective component or how you feel, 2) Cognitive component or way of thinking, 3) Behavioral component or how to act. This study used quantitative approach. The participants in this research were patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis therapy. They were selected by non probability sampling method: the purposive sampling. The reliability of hopelessness scale tested by used Cronbach Alpha through SPSS 17.0, with a reliability coefficient 0.973 for the entire test. It showed that 97.3% of the measuring instrument is derived from the true variance of hopelessness, while 2.7% is error variance (error that occur in the measurement).
