Abstract

Garcinia is a plant genus known as “manggis-manggisan” and has more than 180 species. It is rich in chemical compounds including derivatives of flavonoid, xanthone, benzophenone, which are among those of potential antioxidants. Intensive studies have been done on sesoot (Garcinia picrorrhiza MIQ) and some of the results have been published. In the present study antioxidative effect of the sesoot fruit (Garcinia picrorrhiza MIQ) was examined using its n-hexane extract. A particular observation was carried out on its scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrilhydrazil (DPPH), a free radical that is toxic to non-toxic compounds. The fruit was obtained from Bogor, dried and made into powder. Some 717.26 g of powder was soaked several times in 2 L of n-hexane. The filtrate was then evaporated using vacuum rotary evaporator to yield 30.0 g n-hexane extract. An assay for its scavenging effect was prepared using 4.0 g of the n-hexane extract on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrilhydrazil (DPPH). It was shown that its inhibition concentration (IC50) on DPPH was 30.88 ppm. Compared to standard synthetic antioxidant, this seavenging effect was more or less similar to that of Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (BHT) and lower than that of Butylated Hydroxy Anisol (BHA) with IC50 30.20 ppm and 12.75 ppm, respectively. Further studies are still required to explore the possibility to use this plant in clinical practice.
